The 12 Days of Christmas for Pets

On the first day of Christmas my human gave to me…

a puzzle bowl under the tree!

I love puzzle bowls for dogs & cats! Why? Well, it is a common scenario for pets to gobble all their food down. They don’t work to earn it, and are very excited to see it once or twice daily. But, a puzzle bowl serves multiple purposes to help pets and pet owners. It slows down their meal time, which serves 2 purposes. First, it is good enrichment for them, because they have to learn to solve a puzzle and work their way through it. Second, because we have slowed down their eating they are less likely to vomit afterwards.

There are many styles to choose from. There is one version for dogs that just involves squiggly lines in it or bumps like a lego so they have to work around it. Another option is a food dispensing toy that they have to manipulate around to earn their meal. This offers great stimulation for their brain! The same goes for cats who it seems just lay around all day, but could it be we aren’t enriching their environment enough? Do we need to offer them something better to do? By working for their food, they increase their activity and increase stimulus to the brain, which can end in better quality of life for our indoor friends. Cats are used to stalking and hunting prey, so wouldn’t it be great if we could offer a similar scenario inside? Well now we can! A veterinarian has developed a prey driven food delivery system for cats!

Check it out at It’s called the indoor hunting feeder. Once there, scroll down for a video on how it works.

Meantime, watch Dr Curtis’ dog Harlow having a meal from her puzzle feeder.
