I was shadowing here at Oakview when I was asked if I would be interested in a position as a kennel attendant. Even though my heart started beating out of my chest, I contained my excitement as I replied with “Yes! I would love that!” It was always a dream of mine to work at a veterinary clinic, and that dream came true just like that. I am a Pre-Vet student at UW-Stevens Point, and I know that this experience will help set me apart from others in those pesky vet school applications.
Even though I was ecstatic that I was given this opportunity, I knew that this position came with a very large amount of responsibility. I am responsible for the care of clients’ pets when they are away; they are trusting me with their beloved family members. With pets of my own, I know what it is like leaving the care of my pets in the hands of others when I have to be away. I want people to know that I take care of their pets the way I would want people to do with mine. I give them endless love and attention, and I receive lots in return.
Being a kennel attendant comes with some challenges such as picking up waste, cleaning, and never-ending amounts of laundry. But, the positives well out-weigh the negatives. I can come to work at the clinic after an already lengthy and stressful day of classes and working at my animal management position and relieve some stress. I know that may sound crazy but being around all these pets that want nothing but to give me love is well worth the long days. I will use this experience to help me achieve my future career goals as a veterinarian and just go on to live another dream.
