Straight From a Horse’s Mouth: Equine Rescue in Wisconsin

The Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation, Inc. (MHWF), is a Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries Verified Equine Charity- a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. MHWF is run by 100% volunteers and has no paid staff. MHWF is dedicated to finding homes for horses who have found themselves at a transition in their lives. The horses come to them for many reasons and each horse has its own unique story. Some horses come to them from working directly with law enforcement, some finding themselves in unfortunate situations and some come from owners who have found they could no longer keep their horse for a variety of reasons but still want to keep them safe. They all have one thing in common; they need a loving, caring and safe home. The policies established are the result of the accumulation of years of experience and planning.

Cricket was my first horse, adopted in 2006. She gave me many good years of showing and taught me a lot about horses. Once I was ready to move forward with my horse showing career I was able to donate her back to the rescue for another family to enjoy.

Part of the rescues vision is to show people that adoption is one of the best ways to add a horse to your family, and these horses are just as worthy, talented, versatile and adaptive as any other horse out there. At MHWF, they believe there are no unwanted horses, just unfound connections. They want to help you find the right connection. The horses that come to MHWF are all completely vetted, kept up-to-date on all cares, and evaluated for training level. They all continue to be handled and worked with, and many horses have additional training put into them to further help them find the right home. The adoption process is easy, filling out the application and talking to them about who your next equine partner may be.

MHWF has been on a mission in Wisconsin to bring awareness and education to the public regarding horse adoption, horse rescue and horse welfare since 2001. MHWF has helped place an average of 65 horses per year into wonderful homes, directly through the adoption program. MHWF is happy to work alongside the Wisconsin Horse Alliance to help facilitate their mission of working to ensure the safety and well-being of Wisconsin’s horses through empowering owners, coordinating resources, and educating the community. MHWF is continually striving to add more programs and services to help our equine community and equines throughout the United States.

MHWF is holding their annual Raffle Party on June 30, 2018, offering some great cash prizes. The funds generated through this raffle will go directly toward the care of horses in need. This is MHWF’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and it is a great time too! The drawing will be held at the MHWF facility on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 6pm. The public is welcome, and doors open at 2 pm. This is a really fun day and they provide great food, beverages, and live music by Wisconsin legend Tuck Pence from 8 pm to midnight. Besides the raffle drawing there will be tons of door prizes, a live auction, a 50/50 raffle, and just an all-around great time! Tickets can be purchased through Nikki here at Oakview for those who are interested.
