On the 12th Day of Christmas for Pets

On the 12th Day of Christmas my best friend gave to me…

12 stuffed kongs!

11 homemade treats,

10 bristle bones,

9 cat trees,

8 litter boxes and a visit to the indoor cat initiative,

7 treat pouches,

6 pheromone diffusers,

5 hands free leashes,

4 Glow in the dark LED collars,

3 Da Bird Cat Toys,

2 chuck-its

and a puzzle bowl under the tree.

I have discovered through many conversations with pet owners that they are only touching the surface as far as using a Kong. First, there are different chew strengths, so likely one will work for you depending on how aggressively your dog chews. The black ones are the strongest. They even make puppy ones since their baby teeth are more prone to breaking. In addition, there is a premade Kong stuffing, which is fine, but we have more ideas to help stimulate your pet’s mind. Try stuffing it with a canned version of the diet your best friend already eats. Now stuff the kong all the way, don’t just smear a small amount on it. Make it hard for them! Once they develop some tricks for getting all the food out, take it up a notch! Freeze it overnight. This creates an extra challenge and keeps them busy for longer. This is great for family mealtimes when you’d rather your dog is not underfoot.

If you find that stuffing solid is too hard for your pet, start with some kibble inside and let them figure out that rolling it around releases yummy snacks.

We routinely use these in our exam rooms for puppies or even adult dogs. It is a good distraction during exams and vaccines. And we dole them out in Club Vet, our boarding facility, to offer stimulation while their families are away.
